Alberto A. Hernandez

December 6, 1930 – February 12, 2022

Las Cruces, NM – Alberto A. Hernandez, age 91, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather, uncle, son, brother, and friend, was called home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on February 12, 2022. He was called home only three months after his beloved wife, Olga G. Hernandez.

Alberto was born on December 6, 1930, in Colonia Esperanza, Chihuahua, Mexico to Luis Hernandez and Carmen Alfaro Hernandez. He was the eldest of five children. Alberto spent much of his childhood living and working in Mexico.

At a young age, Alberto learned the meaning of responsibility, passion, and pride. As a child he learned to work the family farm, how to play guitar--a God given talent--as well as many other things. He attended school in Mexico until the third grade. With only a third-grade education to his name, he was never discouraged. In fact, it further fueled his determination. His desire and diligence helped establish the foundation for his future.

As a teenager, he moved to Cuidad Juarez with his parents to find stable work. Little did he know his new home would lead him to the love of his life. Alberto met Olga Huerta Galvez and took every opportunity to gain her interest. His perseverance won her over and they married on July 17, 1948, at the young ages of 16 and 17. During their 73 years of marriage, Alberto and Olga were fortunate to have 17 children (12 sons and 5 daughters). Through this remarkable blessing, their lives were enriched with over 50 grandchildren, over 70 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild.

Alberto worked in many capacities, but it was his work at Stahmann Farms that placed his roots in Las Cruces, NM. He later took a seasonal job with the City of Las Cruces and quickly moved into a full-time position in the wastewater department. He became crew chief and continued that position until his retirement after 29 years of service. He remained a resident of Las Cruces until his passing.

Alberto was a natural born leader. He wore many hats and carried many titles. He was a man of God and served wholeheartedly. He was not only given the gift of music but also the gift of ministry. He played an instrumental role in establishing the Apostolic Church of Jesus Christ back in 1965. His ministry spanned over 59 years, and he was fondly known as "the walking Bible."

It's not hard to imagine that Alberto was loved and respected by many. He took pride in his family, in his spiritual walk with the Lord, and in his career. He led by example and loved genuinely. Though a man of few words, unless he was preaching the gospel, his presence was always evident. He was the steadfast patriarch of the Hernandez family and will be missed immensely.

Alberto was preceded in death by his wife Olga G. Hernandez, daughter Delia G. Hernandez, parents Luis and Carmen Hernandez, and brother Victor Hernandez.

Alberto is survived by his 16 children: Samuel G. Hernandez, Hector G. Hernandez (Susie), Yolanda Roman (Willie), Rosemary Dueñas (Efrain), Alberto A. Hernandez Jr., Carlos G. Hernandez (Sara), Ernesto G. Hernandez, Armando G. Hernandez (Elena), Betty Araiza (Adolph), Moses G. Hernandez, Jacob G. Hernandez, Isaac G. Hernandez, Gracie Arzapalo, Abel G. Hernandez, Andres G. Hernandez and Ismael G. Hernandez; two sisters: Dora Lazalde, and Ester Mendoza, and one brother, Filemon Hernandez, along with grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Serving as pallbearers will be six of his twelve sons: Armando, Moses, Jacob, Abel, Andres, and Ismael Hernandez. Honorary pallbearers are the remaining six sons: Samuel, Hector, Alberto Jr., Carlos, Ernesto, and Isaac Hernandez.

The family would like to invite extended family, friends, and brothers and sisters in Christ to join them for a celebration of life service on Friday, March 11, 2022. Services will begin at 10:00 a.m. at Apostolic Church of God in Christ, located at 902 S. Alamo, Las Cruces, NM. The interment service at Masonic Cemetery, located at 760 S. Compress Road, Las Cruces, NM, will begin at 1:15 p.m.
