Obituary

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved Samuel "Sam" Ortiz Sanchez, who departed this life on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at the age of 79.

Born in Santa Rita, NM, on March 3, 1946, to David and Rita Sanchez, Sam was raised in the mining towns of Santa Rita and Morenci, AZ, before moving to Silver City, NM, in 1963. After graduating high school, he pursued a degree in Electrical Engineering, first attending Western New Mexico University and later earning his B.S. from New Mexico State University in 1970.

Sam dedicated 35 years of service to White Sands Missile Range, working as an Electrical Engineer and Master Planner. His career also included time at Kennecott Copper Corporation and Lockheed Electronics at NASA.

Sam met the love of his life, Sylvia, in 1967 a bond that blossomed into 57 beautiful years of marriage. Together, they shared countless adventures, often turning business trips into memorable getaways, with Ruidoso holding a special place in their hearts.

A gifted craftsman and devoted family man, Sam built four homes, lovingly wiring, plumbing, and designing each. He had a passion for gardening, photography, and sports—pitching fast-pitch softball for over 30 years and coaching youth soccer for a decade. His homemade salsa, which earned a "Best Tasting" award in 2015, was a family favorite.

A faithful member of the Assembly of God, Sam served in Bible Study, Sunday School, and as Commander of the Royal Rangers.

Sam is preceded in death by his parents, brother Rueben, and sisters Gloria and Ester. He is survived by his wife Sylvia, sons Samuel Jr. (Heidi), Daniel (Amanda), Salomon (Rachael), his sister Linda Flores, and brother David Sanchez.

Sam's legacy of love, faith, and craftsmanship will live on in all who knew him.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to Mesilla Valley Hospice at www.myhospice.org. The donation button can be found at the top of their homepage.
