Obituary

On June 24, 2025, Samuel "Sammy" Gomez, 85, was called home to be with our Lord and Savior. Sammy passed away peacefully in Las Cruces, NM in the arms of his wife.

Sammy was born on February 16, 1940, to his parents Juan Sr. and Refugio Gomez in Brazito, NM and went on to live a happy, fulfilled life. He started out his young adult life by serving his country in the United States Army. Later he would follow his passion for cars, opening Olympic Radiator Shop in Alamogordo, NM. While running his business for 40 years, he loved drag racing the cars that he cared for. Sammy found happiness in making others laugh. Whether it was a silly nickname or a joke, he was sure to get a smile out of everyone. Sammy was a man of strong faith, and it showed through his interactions with everyone he met.

Sammy is survived by his wife, his partner, his best friend, Maria Elena Gomez, whom he spent 57 years of love and happiness with. He is also survived by his brothers, Juan Gomez (Amalia), Daniel Gomez (Jenny), and Bobby Gomez (Gina), all of El Paso, TX and his cousin Chuy Chavarria. He is also survived by a brother-in-law Salvador Hernandez (Nellie), his life-long friend Norbeto Salais, and friend, Harry Davis who was always there for Sammy and his wife to lend a hand when needed. He is preceded in death by his parents, Juan Sr. and Refugio Gomez, Chimeno and Carmen Chavarria, his uncle and aunt who raised Sammy when his grandparents passed, and his brother Henry Romero (Concha). He is also preceded in death by his wife's siblings who became his own, Manuela Clark (Willie), Antonio Hernandez, Ramona Bustamante (Joe), Celia Romero (Antonio), and Gloria Hernandez Reyna. During his life he was surrounded by the love of his pets, Paloma, his dog whom he shared his journey with for 12 years, and Manchas, his cat.

A prayer vigil for Sammy will be held on Thursday, July 31, 2025 at St. Genevieve Catholic Church in Las Cruces, NM. The rosary will begin at 10:30 AM followed by mass at 11:00 AM. Immediately after mass, all are welcome to join at the St. Joseph's Cemetery, where Sammy will be laid to rest.

Although we miss Sammy deeply, we take comfort in knowing he now walks peacefully, hand in hand with the angels on Heaven's streets of gold.
