Las Cruces

Obituary

It is with deep sorrow and much love that the family of RAMON MONTOYA shares that Ramon, age 65, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, June 13, 2025, surrounded by those who loved him most. Ramon was a lifelong resident of Las Cruces, New Mexico — a place he was proud to call home. He was a 1978 graduate of Las Cruces High School and true to his spirit, was a "Bulldawg forever." Ramon built a rich and meaningful life here, full of family, friendships, and community.

On May 16, 2015, Ramon married Emmy, and together they shared a beautiful life filled with love, laughter, and countless cherished memories. Ramon was a devoted father to three wonderful children and a proud and supportive stepfather to Emmy's four children. His greatest joy was his family, and nothing made him happier than watching his grandchildren grow, especially as they played sports — he was their biggest fan. Ramon had a lifelong passion for sports, from his days playing baseball in grade school, high school, and with the American Legion, to being named to the New Mexico All-Star baseball team his senior year as catcher. He was a true fan at heart, especially of the Kansas City Chiefs and the Los Angeles Dodgers, often seen in his KC red or LA blue.

Throughout his life, Ramon gave generously of his time and talents. He coached middle school football and basketball for Las Cruces Public Schools and worked many dedicated years for the City of Las Cruces Gas Department before his retirement. He was a man who loved to stay busy — whether it was hunting, fishing, woodworking, or cooking up his famous red chile that everyone looked forward to at family gatherings and hunting trips. Ramon's faith and trust in God were the foundation of his strength. He was kind, loving, and supportive — a rock for his family and friends. His optimism, encouragement, and willingness to help others defined who he was. A great listener with a smile that could light up a room, Ramon never met a stranger. His love of music and dancing, especially with Emmy, will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.

Ramon is survived by his loving wife, Hermelinda "Emmy" Montoya; his children Jaime Montoya, Teresa Montoya-Morales (Steve), and Marisa Montoya; his stepchildren Patrick, Erika, Isaac (Cassandra), and Emilia Florez; his beloved grandchildren Kason, CJ, Maya, Maybree, Mylan, Malyree, Rian, Meghan, Micah, Zeke, Elliana, Anayha, and Joseph; his brothers Patricio (Maria), Joe (Grace), Daniel (Pam); and his sister Liz. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ramon, and Elidia Montoya, brothers, David Montoya and Armando Porras, and a nephew, Erik P. Montoya.

A celebration of Ramon's life will be held Monday, June 23, 2025, at Baca's Funeral Chapel, 300 E. Boutz Road. Public viewing will begin at 2 PM followed by the Liturgy at 3 PM. Serving as casket bearers will be Eddie Carrillo, Julian Perez for Fito, Steve Chacon, Jim Konen, Oscar Lucero Jr., and Daniel Montoya.

The family is deeply grateful for the outpouring of love, support, and prayers during this time. Your kindness brings comfort, and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
