PETE P. ESQUIBEL, age 80, of Las Cruces, New Mexico, passed away October 31, 2024, peacefully. Pete was born May 16, 1944, in Las Vegas, New Mexico to Celina Vigil and Fidel Esquibel.
Pete started his career in boxing at the age of 14. He went on to become a 6-time Golden Gloves Champion of New Mexico from 1963-1968, AAU State Champion in 1962, 1964 and 1968, represented USA vs. Mexico in the 1968 International boxing match, and was a runner up in the Olympic trials. He was inducted into the New Mexico Boxing Hall of Fame in 2012. Pete had a long career in law enforcement and with the New Mexico National Guard. Pete loved boxing, collecting, fixing, and riding bicycles, and going to yard sales.
Pete is survived by his wife of 55 years, Veronica Trujillo Esquibel; and children, Celina Esquibel (Dino), Agnes McManic (Greg), Ruben Esquibel, and Roberto Esquibel; 7 grandchildren, Aviliana, Cameron, Kymberly, Jacia, Derek (Kieona) and Hayley. Other survivors include his 6 brothers and 4 sisters, Isabel, Able, Raymond, Joe, Tony, Lorenzo, Patrico, Maria, Clara, and Luisa; as well as numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 12 Noon, Saturday, December 14, 2024, at St. Genevieve Catholic Church. 100 S. Epina Street. Inurnment of cremains will follow at Masonic Cemetery, 760 S. Compress Road. Military honors will be accorded by the New Mexico Army National Guard Honor Guard and the Marine Corps League - El Perro Diablo Detachment.
