OSCAR RENTERIA MERINO, 70, of Bayard, NM, passed away Saturday, January 24, 2024, in Las Cruces, NM. Born June 30, 1953, in Santa Rita to the late Severiano "Chano" and Otilla Merino. Oscar was a dedicated individual who spent over 40 years working for the copper mines in Santa Rita, NM. He was married to the love of his life and high school sweetheart Mary E. Merino until she passed away in 2010.
Oscar is survived by his children, Elaine Varela (Jesus), Arlene Camarena (Santiago), and Oscar Merino; his loving grandchildren, Yesenia (Ben), Yamira, Manuel (Aleena), Destri, Brianna (Phillip), and Antonia. Oscar had three great-grandchildren that he loved very much, Ariel, Jasmine, and Jaxxton; as well as two brothers, Carlos Merino (Pia) and Sam Merino (Lisa); sisters, Lupita Lueck (Bill), and Mary Ellen Merino; tios that he cared very much for, Rey and Margaret Merino, and Dr. Al and Nancy Merino. Oscar also had special friends in his life, Minnie Marques, a great companion who was always by his side. Javier Peru, whom he loved like a son, and two special friends, his compa Joe (Ana), and Pete Salas; numerous nieces, nephews, God children, and cousins that he loved very much. He was preceded in death by his father, SQ "Chano" Merino; mother, Otilla Merino; his loving wife, Mary E. Merino; sister-in-law, Lucy Esparza; brother-in-law, Danny Esparza; his in-laws, Manuel and Aurelia Esparza, and numerous aunts and uncles.
Oscar was a graduate of Cobre High School and furthered his education at Western New Mexico University. In his free time, he enjoyed watching his beloved Cowboys play, hunting, fishing, taking rides to the mountains, and spending quality time with his family and friends.
A graveside service will be held at 12 Noon Saturday, February 24, 2024, at the Hanover Cemetery, followed by a celebration of life at the Bayard Community Center.
Oscar Renteria Merino will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
