Obituary

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and dear friend OFELIA TORRES HERNANDEZ, at the age of 87, at her home surrounded by her loving family.  She was born June 1, 1936, in Delicias, Chihuahua, Mexico to Mrs. Benjamin Castro and Mr. Eduardo Torres.

At a young age, she started working at "El Rancho de Mondy" and soon after met the love of her life whom she was married to for 64 years.  Ofelia loved hosting all who visited her home and cooked meals many would consider feasts; she truly epitomized the saying "mi casa es su casa" never closing her doors to anyone.  She never missed a chance to braid young ladies' hair, reminding them to never leave the house without putting on their makeup.

You taught us how to love and how to fight, you gave us strength, you gave us might… a stronger person would be hard to find, in your heart, you were always kind. You fought for us all in one way or another, not just as a wife, not just as a mother, for all of us you gave your best, and now the time has come for you to rest….so go in peace, you've earned your sleep, your love in our hearts we'll eternally keep.  This is the legacy we keep of you, the example of a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Those left to mourn her passing include a son, Tomas Hernandez; daughter Ida Fernandez and husband Joel, all from Las Cruces; 9 grandchildren; Ferny Luna, Raechel Barrera (Gerardo), Tom Hernandez (Eva), Erika Hernandez, Angelica Perez (Andy), Bobby Calderon (Josie), Sabrina Gutierrez (Ray), Serina Calderon (David), and Salina Calderon (Eric) as well as 30 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great granddaughter. Other survivors include two brothers, Juan Torres of Garfield, and Rafael Torres (Ana) of Las Cruces; and a sister, Adela Amador of Rincon; numerous nieces, nephews, and a host of dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Tomas Hernandez; daughter Leonor Quesada; sister Carmen Torres-Garcia and 2 brothers, Felix, and Manuel Torres.

A celebration of life will be held on Friday June 7, 2024, at Baca's Funeral Chapel, 300 E. Boutz Road. A visitation with family will begin at 9 AM and the Funeral Service will start at 10 AM with her grandson, Pastor Bobby officiating. Concluding Service and Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens Cemetery, 5140 W. Picacho Avenue where she will be laid to rest alongside her beloved husband in the family plot.

Serving as casket bearers will be Tomas Hernandez Jr., Fernando Luna, Bobby Calderon, Joel R. Fernandez, Ray Gutirrez and Eric Serna.

Service arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Baca's Funeral Chapels of Las Cruces, 527-2222. Your exclusive provider for "Veterans and Family Memorial Care." For online condolences logon to www.bacasfuneralchapelslascruces.com
