Days after a surgery, MICHAEL D SHOBERG took his final breath surrounded by family on November 13, 2024. He was born on November 18, 1941, in Jacksonville, Illinois. Mike lived in Illinois, Minnesota, Tennessee, Detroit, Galveston, and Ohio. Finally, during elementary school, he settled in White Sands Civilian Housing along with his mother, Katherine Richardson, and adoptive father, Richard Walter Shoberg.

Mike attended Las Cruces High School but, after some drama, quit in 1959 to join the U.S. Army. He served three years of active duty, during The Berlin Crisis, receiving a medal for driving 100,000 miles in Los Angeles without an accident and a Letter of Appreciation from Brigadier General R.G. Fergusson for "excellent performance of duty" as his command vehicle driver in Germany. With the G.I. Bill, Mike attended NMSU. After briefly trying his hand at engineering, he excelled in accounting and received Bachelor of Business Administration in June 1968 and Master of Arts, Educational Management and Development in January 1976.

Mike was a lumberjack, Dairy Queen worker, grocery bagger, lettuce picker, icehouse worker, bridge builder, milkman, wheel salesman, race car driver, paratrooper trainee, command vehicle driver, company clerk, accountant, tax preparer, investment agent, comptroller, landlord, air conditioner repairman, candidate for School Board, church usher, St. Paul's Methodist, poll worker, newspaper deliverer, candy machine owner, taekwondo instructor, organization treasurer, reunion organizer, census taker, and census field representative. He retired from two occupations: Head of NMSU Business Office 1990, and Southern New Mexico Census Field Representative 2016.

Mike was a baseball player, Boy Scout, softball player, basketball player, bird hunter, deer hunter, scrapper, horseback rider, arm wrestler, dancer, black belt, taekwondo fighter, hapkido practitioner, national taekwondo referee, golfer, weightlifter, poker player, and casino gambler.
Mike managed his diabetes well for over 20 years and was once featured in Healthy U as the first recipient of robotic heart bypass in Las Cruces.
Mike is preceded in death by his parents, his childhood posse Bill, Sharbor, Courtney, Artie and Lonnie, his grandson, Ray Michael Woods, his niece, Brenda Bustamantes. He is survived by Elaine (nee Heathman), his wife of 60 years; his daughter, Marcy and her significant other, Tom Baca; his son, Jason; and his daughter, Susan, and her husband Mike Martinez; Mr. Shoberg's main caregiver for over a year. He is survived by his grandchildren, Kayda, Julian, Ciara, Zeppelin, Emberleigh, and great-grandchild, Serenity. He is additionally survived by his sister, C. Gay Coburn of Phoenix; niece Leta Kay, nephew Critt Jr. and great nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by numerous other relatives, friends, and associates.

Services will be at Baca's Funeral Chapels of Las Cruces, Thursday, November 21, 2024, Gathering will begin at 9:30 AM, and services at 10:00 AM. The service will be simulcast (played online) at www.bacastream.com. A burial will follow at Masonic Cemetery.
Serving as casket bearers will be family members. Honorary bearer is Wesley (Butch) Davis.
