Obituary

MICHAEL CHARLES McCLANAHAN, age 72, of Las Cruces, New Mexico, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, September 1, 2025. Born in Burlington, Iowa, on September 10, 1952, to Mayre Glenn and Donald McClanahan, Michael—known affectionately as " Mr. Mike" to family and friends—lived a life marked by service, devotion, and quiet strength.

A proud veteran of the United States Army, Mike served his country honorably from 1972 to 1974, achieving the rank of SP4/E4. Stationed in Germany, he performed maintenance and repairs on Hawk Missile Launchers and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Marksman M-16 designation for his skill and dedication.

After his military service, Mike found purpose in his community, working for 23 years as a Crossing Guard with Las Cruces Police Department. Rain or shine, he stood watch with a smile, ensuring the safety of countless children and earning the admiration of parents and staff alike.

Mike was a devoted member of the First Presbyterian Church, where his quiet faith and warm presence touched many. He was a beloved father, brother, grandfather, uncle, and dear friend—always ready with a story, a helping hand, or a Cubs score update. His Baby Blue 1972 Pinto was a local legend, much like the man himself.

Mike's memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. His loyalty, humor, and gentle spirit will be deeply missed.

A Funeral Service will be held at 3:30 PM Tuesday, September 9, 2025, at the First Presbyterian Church, 200 E. Boutz Road, Las Cruces. Military honors will be rendered by the New Mexico Army National Guard Honor Guard and the Marine Corps League – El Perro Diablo Detachment.

Concluding Service and Interment will take place at 10 AM on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, at Fort Bliss National Cemetery, 5200 Fred Wilson Road, El Paso, Texas.
