Maria Elena "Nena" Chavez, 80, of Lovington, New Mexico, passed away on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, in Las Cruces, New Mexico, surrounded by her family.

Nena was born on May 23, 1945, in Villa Corona, Chihuahua, Mexico, to Gregorio Esparza and Severiana Cereceres. She was the seventh of eight children and grew up with a strong sense of resilience and devotion to her faith and family. Later, in Dexter, New Mexico, she met Manuel Aranda Chavez. The two were married on February 9, 1967, and together built a life grounded in hard work, tradition, and unwavering commitment.

Nena was a devoted member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Lovington, New Mexico. After moving to Las Cruces to be closer to her children, she attended Santa Rosa de Lima Catholic Church, continuing her lifelong dedication to her faith. Her belief in God was a central part of who she was and remained constant throughout her life.

She had a passion for crocheting and spent many hours creating baby outfits, tablecloths, and crucifixes for her family. Her work reflected both her skill and the care she put into everything she made. She enjoyed her weekly trips to Hobby Lobby, shopping, and going on walks when she was able. She also took pride in caring for her plants.

Nena was a strong pillar of her family who valued her loved ones deeply. She cherished her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and took great pride in watching her family grow across generations.

She is survived by her children: Martha Jaquez; Gerardo Chavez; Jr Chavez (Raquel); Monique Chavez (Steven); and Claudia Johnson (Michael); her brother, Gregorio Esparza; and her sister, Eva Esparza. She also leaves behind twelve grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Manuel Aranda Chavez; her parents, Gregorio Esparza and Severiana Cereceres; her brothers, Palemon, Estevan, and Hilario Esparza; and her sisters, Martha Esparza Rojas and Juanita Esparza Morales.

Nena will be remembered for her strength, her faith, and the life she built for her family.

Serving as pallbearers are her grandsons, Tylar and Colin Jaquez and Cesar Jaras; her nephews, Jesus (Jessie) Morales and Salvador Esparza; and her son-in-law, Steven Avalos.

Honorary pallbearers include her sons, Jr. and Gerardo; her son-in-law, Michael Johnson; her grandsons, Tre-Anthony and Michael Jr.; her granddaughters, Alicia (Bebe), Allianna, Amirah, Kendra, Kayla, Mariah, Keana, and Iesha; as well as her many beloved nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held Wednesday, May 6, 2026, starting at 9:30am at St. Genevieve Catholic Church, 100 South Espina Street.  A prayer vigil will start at 10:30am with a Funeral Mass to follow. The Rite of Committal and Interment will be at St. Joseph's Cemetery.

Nena nació el 23 de mayo de 1945 en Villa Corona, Chihuahua, México, hija de Gregorio Esparza y Severiana Cereceres. Fue la séptima de ocho hijos y creció con un fuerte sentido de resiliencia y una profunda devoción a su fe y a su familia. Más tarde, en Dexter, Nuevo México, conoció a Manuel Aranda Chávez. Ambos contrajeron matrimonio el 9 de febrero de 1967 y juntos construyeron una vida basada en el trabajo arduo, la tradición y un compromiso inquebrantable.

Nena fue una devota miembro de la Iglesia Católica Santo Tomás de Aquino en Lovington, Nuevo México. Después de mudarse a Las Cruces para estar más cerca de sus hijos, asistió a la Iglesia Católica Santa Rosa de Lima, continuando así su dedicación de toda la vida a su fe. Su creencia en Dios fue una parte fundamental de quien era y se mantuvo constante a lo largo de su vida.

Tenía una pasión por tejer a crochet y pasaba muchas horas creando ropita de bebé, manteles y crucifijos para su familia. Su trabajo reflejaba tanto su habilidad como el cariño que ponía en todo lo que hacía. Disfrutaba sus visitas semanales a Hobby Lobby, ir de compras y salir a caminar cuando le era posible. También se enorgullecía de cuidar sus plantas.

Nena fue un pilar fuerte de su familia y valoraba profundamente a sus seres queridos. Amaba a sus hijos, nietos y bisnietos, y se sentía muy orgullosa de ver crecer a su familia a lo largo de las generaciones.

Le sobreviven sus hijos: Martha Jáquez; Gerardo Chávez; Jr. Chávez (Raquel); Monique Chávez (Steven); y Claudia Johnson (Michael); su hermano, Gregorio Esparza; y su hermana, Eva Esparza. También deja a doce nietos, once bisnietos y numerosos sobrinos y sobrinas.

Le precedieron en la muerte su esposo, Manuel Aranda Chávez; sus padres, Gregorio Esparza y Severiana Cereceres; sus hermanos, Palemón, Esteban e Hilario Esparza; y sus hermanas, Martha Esparza Rojas y Juanita Esparza Morales.

Nena será recordada por su fortaleza, su fe y la vida que construyó para su familia.

Sirven como portadores del féretro sus nietos Tylar y Colin Jáquez y César Jaras; sus sobrinos Jesús (Jessie) Morales y Salvador Esparza; y su yerno Steven Avalos.

Como portadores honorarios figuran sus hijos Jr. y Gerardo; su yerno Michael Johnson; sus nietos Tre-Anthony y Michael Jr.; sus nietas Alicia (Bebé), Allianna, Amirah, Kendra, Kayla, Mariah, Keana e Iesha; así como sus muchos queridos sobrinos y sobrinas.

La visitación se llevará a cabo el miércoles 6 de mayo de 2026, a partir de las 9:30 a.m., en la Iglesia Católica Santa Genoveva, ubicada en 100 South Espina Street. El Rosario comenzará a las 10:30 a.m., seguido de la Misa de Funeral. El rito de sepelio y la inhumación se realizarán en el Cementerio San José.
