Kathleen “Kati” Kelly passed away peacefully on October 25, 2026, in Las Cruces, New Mexico surrounded by her family. She is survived by her sister Gayle Kolp (Ken) and her children; Michael Hackett (Mary Jane), Patti Henderson, Matthew Hackett, and Sean Hackett. She was blessed with nine grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
Kati attended NMSU and graduated in 1996 with a degree in Social Work. She worked for the State of NM as a caseworker for abused children. She was the first “Senior” exchange student, and she traveled to Belize for a semester while studying for her degree.
She was “Mom” to many and always had “The house of the open-door policy”, never turning away somebody in need. Her heart was generous. She always had a cup of coffee or meal for everyone who came through the door.
She took up painting in the late 80’s and became quite the painter. She loved to read, travel and take spontaneous road trips and camp in the back of her pickup. She was also involved with AA and recently celebrated her 57th year of sobriety. She was eccentric and New Age loved her crystals and always “Saged” the house and all who lived in it on the full moon. She fostered cats and was a pet sitter for over 10 years. She loved animals.
Kati was a friend to all, and she was known to her fellow residents as “The Hug Lady”. She was the first to greet new residents and introduce herself to new employees at her Assisted Living. Her smile and hugs will be missed by many.
At her request there will be no services. In lieu of flowers she requested that donations be made to St. Vincent de Paul Society or your favorite charity. The family will be having a private memorial at a later date.
Service arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Baca’s Funeral Chapel and Sunset Crematory, 300 E. Boutz Road, 575-527-2222. Your exclusive provider for “Veterans and Family Memorial Care.” For online condolences log on to www.bacasfuneralchapelslascruces.com
