It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of JULIAN "JUNIE" MAYERS, JR., he passed peacefully Thursday, September 11, 2025, at the age of 82, surrounded by his loving family and friends. "Junie", as he was fondly called by friends and family, was born in Doña Ana on April 23, 1943, to Julian C. Mayers and Eva Peña Mayers.
He was a longtime resident of the Radium Springs/Leasburg area and a member of Our Lady of Purification Church. Julian was known for his love of team roping. He had a great love for horses, his dogs, and all animals in general. Junie's strong work ethic was evident in everything he pursued, whether it was his performance on the job, in the arena, or especially when helping others. He retired from NASA in 2005, after 29 years of service.
Junie and Sue shared forty-four loving years of marriage. Junie is survived, by his wife, Sue Mayers; sisters, Margaret De La O, Josie Chavez, and brother George Mayers. He leaves behind his sons, Julian G. Mayers (Cora), and Jerry Mayers, a daughter Diane De La Cruz (Daniel); grandchildren, Brian Mayers, Don Padilla, Brandon Mayers, Teresa De La Cruz, Elysha De La Cruz, Nadia Anderson (Travis), Melissa Gilbert (Tristan), and Stephanie Achen (Scott); great-grandchildren Julian, Gabriel, and Trinity Mayers, Leo Padilla, Jasmine and Matthias Morales, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Anita Lopez, Herminia Garcia, and Dorothy Smith.
At his request, cremation has taken place, and a memorial service will be held at 10 AM Thursday, October 9, 2025, at Baca's Funeral Chapel, 300 E. Boutz Road, Las Cruces.
