JOSIE MAE PERKINS HAWN, age 85, passed away Friday, October 4, 2024. She was born February 25, 1939, in Wichita, Kansas to Wanna Anthony and Cy Perkins. Josie was a loving homemaker, and a member of the Mimbres Booster Club and Georgetown #4 Order of Eastern Star.

At a young age Josie's parents moved from Kansas to join family members in Oregon. The family of four remained in Hood River, Oregon where her father was a traveling salesman, and her mother was a homemaker and volunteer to many youth organizations.  While in her youth, Josie participated in Campfire Girls, 4-H, church youth group and was an active member of the Hood River High School Blue Dragons Class of 1957.  Josie kept in touch with classmates and loved attending class reunions.  The last class reunion that Josie attended was in 2019 when the classmates were 80 years young.  The 2017 class reunion had to be cancelled due to a large forest fire in the Hood River – Multnomah Falls area.  This would have been the 60th year reunion.

After graduating from high school, Josie went to college nearby Portland, Oregon at Lewis, and Clark College.  After graduating from college while on a trip with a friend to Tucson, Arizona, Josie met Mason Mattocks.  Soon after they married in June 1962.  Mason worked on a ranch near Tucson.  The couple soon moved back to Mimbres, New Mexico where Mason had been born and raised and where his family still resided.  Her husband Mason passed away in 1977.  Josie remained living in Mimbres where she raised their son and daughter.  She volunteered for 4-H and was a club leader.  In 1986 Josie married John Hawn who had moved to Mimbres from Missouri.  Together, they built a house in Mimbres Valley.  They enjoyed playing cards with neighbors and traveling.  John did not want to fly so all the traveling was by truck and R.V.  They travelled to every corner of the United States. When Josie's grandchildren were born the travelling slowed down a bit.  Her grandsons were who truly lit up her face and made her day.  Holidays and gatherings took on a whole new meaning.

After John's passing in 2010, Josie soon moved to Las Cruces to be near her kids and grandkids.  She moved to Trails West Senior Living Community where she lived until her passing.  Josie's home was close to the club house, where she was able to walk down to play cards, Dominos, attend the potlucks, attend TOPS meetings and many other activities.  Josie met many people there who she became good friends with.  She was able to start traveling again and was able to travel to almost every corner of the world – sometimes being gone for weeks at a time.  Her recent travels were bus trips with First Baptist Church, which she thoroughly enjoyed – even when the bus broke down.

Josie loved her Trails West Community; she was a 52-year member of the Georgetown Order of Eastern Star in Mimbres.  Josie attended First Baptist Church and senior Sunday School.  Josie and her family truly appreciated all that helped her and included her in events.  She was never one to complain.

Josie is survived of her son, Jim Mattocks and wife Vicki of Stephenville, Texas, daughter Ruth Halvorsen and husband Mark of Las Cruces, New Mexico, her grandchildren; Cheyenne Alvarez, Mason Halvorsen and Randy Halvorsen, friends, and travel buddy's; Belle, Corky, Nita, and many others. Josie was preceded in death by her parents; Cy and Wanna Perkins, husbands; Mason Mattocks and John Hawn, as well as sisters-in-law; Verna Miller, Ena Osborne, Wanda Arnold, Barbra Lee and Faye Mitchell, brothers-in-law; Jerry Mattocks and Claude Mattocks.

At her request, cremation will take place, and A Memorial Service is scheduled at 10 AM Thursday, October 10, 2024, at First Baptist Church, 4201 N. Sonoma Ranch Boulevard, Las Cruces, NM 88011. Inurnment of cremains will be held at a later date at Fort Bayard National Cemetery.
