JAMES "JIM" KAUFMAN passed away peacefully November 6, 2025, in Las Cruces, New Mexico, after a long illness, surrounded by his loving family. Born and raised in Ohio, Jim made Las Cruces his home in the early 1970s, where he built a life of service, teaching, and deep community involvement.

Jim began his professional journey in law enforcement, serving with both the Doña Ana County Sheriff's Department and the New Mexico State University Police Department. However, it was in the classroom that he found his true calling. A gifted and passionate educator, Jim taught Sociology and Criminal Justice at New Mexico State University, Motorcycle Safety for the Motorcycle Safety Foundation, EMT-Basic courses at Doña Ana Community College, and CPR for the American Heart Association. His dedication to teaching spanned decades and touched countless lives.

A proud veteran, Jim served his country with distinction as a U.S. Army helicopter pilot during the Vietnam War, flying UH-1 Hueys (Iroquois). His valor earned him numerous commendations, including, The Distinguished Flying Cross, The Bronze Star and The Air Medal with 38 Oakleaf Clusters.

Jim's commitment to service extended far beyond the military. He was a past president and active member of the New Mexico Crisis Support Team, providing critical assistance to first responders during some of the nation's darkest moments, including the aftermath of the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995 and the September 11 attacks in New York City. He also served on the Region II EMS Board of Directors and volunteered with St. Luke's Health Care Clinic and the New Mexico Medical Reserve Corps.

Jim had a zest for life and a love for learning. He enjoyed flying, riding motorcycles, and staying informed through sports, news, politics, NPR, and KRWG radio. He delighted in teaching his children, nieces, and nephews how to drive, fix cars, pitch tents, play croquet, swing a golf club, and make ice cream the old-fashioned way—always with a side of his famous French fries.

Jim is survived by his beloved wife, Carol C.; his sons Todd (Karen), Andre (Ana), and Leif (Kelly); his sister Kay (Dave); his best friend Mike (Joan); and his cherished dog, Daisy. He was a proud and loving "Opa" to Chase, Alyssa, Devon, Isabelle, Jacob, and Ariana. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Jim will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, teacher, veteran, and friend. His legacy lives on in the lives he shaped, the lessons he taught, and the compassion he shared.

In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place, and no services are scheduled at this time.
