HELEN NEVAREZ TALAVERA, age 77, of Las Cruces, New Mexico, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 23, 2025, at La Posada Mesilla Valley Hospice, surrounded by the love and presence of her devoted family.

Born August 26, 1947, in La Mesa, New Mexico, Helen was the cherished daughter of Josephina Ostos and Rafael Nevarez. She lived a life marked by service, compassion, and unwavering dedication to her family and community. For many years, Helen worked with Boone Transportation as a bus driver for the Gadsden Independent School District, where she touched countless lives with her warmth and reliability.

Helen was a proud and active member of both the VFW Post 4384 in Anthony and the Moose Lodge in Las Cruces, where she formed lasting friendships and contributed to causes close to her heart. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend—known for her generous spirit, sharp wit, and deep loyalty.

She is survived by her beloved sons, James Talavera (Vannaly) of Fort Worth, Texas, and Orlando Talavera (Maria) of Brentwood, California; her lifelong companion, Cruz Talavera; her brother, Gil Nevarez of La Mesa; and her sisters, Otilia Nevarez of La Mesa and Guadalupe Britt (Don) of Raleigh, North Carolina. Helen's greatest joy came from her four grandchildren, Eden, Luzia, Gwen, and Lucas, who brought light and laughter into her life.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents, Josephina and Rafael; her brothers, Billy Nevarez and Israel "Chippy" Nevarez; and her niece, Gloria Nevarez Garza.

A visitation will be held at 10 AM Tuesday, September 2, 2025, at St. Genevieve Catholic Church, 100 S. Espina Street, followed by a Prayer Vigil at 10:30 AM. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 AM, with The Reverend Theophine Okafor celebrant. In accordance with Helen's wishes, cremation will follow, and inurnment of her cremains will take place at a later date.

Helen's legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. Her strength, kindness, and enduring love will never be forgotten.
