In Loving Memory of Gregory York Smith

Gregory York Smith, lovingly known as "Greg" to family and friends and "G.Y." to many of his trucking colleagues, passed away peacefully on July 10, 2026, in Las Cruces, New Mexico, just days before his 77th birthday. He was born on July 15, 1949, in Santa Monica, California, to Doris LaVeta Montgomery and Carlton York Smith.

Greg's life was one of curiosity, service, and unwavering devotion to those he loved. He embraced many careers throughout his life, each reflecting his intelligence, work ethic, and desire to make a difference. He worked as an accountant, attended seminary, owned his own trucking company, and later served as both a driver and dispatcher for Mesilla Valley Transportation. Perhaps one of his most lasting impacts came during his 12 years as a teacher at Santa Teresa High School, where he inspired students alongside his wife, who also taught there, and where his daughter attended school.

Above all else, Greg was a devoted husband, father, uncle, brother, and friend. He is survived by his beloved wife, D'Ila "Dee" Deerman-Smith, whom he loved fiercely and faithfully. He also leaves behind his treasured daughter, Kathleen Finney, and her husband, Alex Finney; his cherished grandniece and nephew, Lexis and Jeremiah Blount Jr.; his brother, Doug Smith; his godson, Ryan Singh; and his beloved cat, Peanut, who was a constant companion.

Greg found joy in life's simple pleasures. He loved playing the organ and listening to beautiful organ and church music. He could often be found relaxing in his recliner with music playing or the news on television. He had an incredible sense of humor and delighted in making others laugh, always ready with a witty comment or a silly joke to brighten someone's day. His calm, gentle nature, analytical mind, and compassionate heart made him someone people naturally turned to for wisdom, encouragement, and steady support.

An avid traveler, Greg especially enjoyed exploring the country with Dee in their RV, creating countless memories together on the open road. Whether sharing a cup of coffee, enjoying a bowl of ice cream, or ending the day with his customary glass of brandy, he appreciated the quiet moments that made life meaningful.

Greg's greatest legacy is the love he poured into his family. He was their biggest supporter, their steady presence, and a constant source of encouragement. His kindness, patience, faith, and gentle spirit will continue to live on in the lives of all who knew and loved him.

During the last year of his life, Greg faced cancer with the same quiet strength, grace, and determination that characterized the way he lived. Even throughout his illness, his gentle spirit, quick wit, and love for his family never wavered.

Greg will be deeply missed and forever remembered by his family, friends, former students, colleagues, and all whose lives were enriched by his warmth, wisdom, and unwavering love.

Greg's faith guided him throughout his life and gave him hope, purpose, and peace. His family finds comfort in knowing that he is now whole and at rest in the presence of his Savior.

Greg will be cremated, and a small memorial service celebrating his life will be held at University United Methodist Church in Las Cruces at 11am on Monday July 27th. In lieu of flowers, consider donating to your favorite charity.
