GONZALO MENDOZA, 87, passed away peacefully on February 1, 2026, in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Born March 18, 1938, in El Paso, Texas, he was proud of his roots in El Segundo Barrio and cherished his years at La Bowie High School, where he formed lifelong friendships and a deep sense of community.

After graduating, Gonzalo enlisted in the United States Army and honorably served four years in Germany during the Cold War. His time in the service shaped his discipline, curiosity, and commitment to understanding the world.

Following his military service, Gonzalo moved to San Francisco, where he earned his B.S. in Physics from San Francisco State University. His passion for science led him to a distinguished 27‑year career with the United States Geological Survey as an earthquake specialist. His work took him across the globe, studying seismic activity and contributing to a deeper understanding of the natural forces that shape our planet. He often said he spent his life "chasing earthquakes," and he did so with dedication, expertise, and a sense of adventure.

Upon retirement, Gonzalo relocated to Las Cruces to be near the only family he had—his beloved cousins. Though he was an only child with no children of his own, he built a circle of family through love, loyalty, and friendship. His cousins and many dear friends will forever remember his intelligence, humor, and the stories he carried from a life lived fully and fearlessly.

Gonzalo is preceded in death by three of the most important women in his life: his mother, Guadalupe; his aunt, Maria; and his cousin, Rita Fernandez. On February 1, 2026, God called him home to join them once again.

He is survived by numerous cousins and many good friends who will miss him deeply.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to those who cared for Gonzalo with compassion and dignity: Wendy, Crystal, and the staff at Help at Home; Rachal from Matrix; Patsy, Gloria, and Reverend George from Hospice; and the dedicated team at Solstice Living Center.

In accordance with his wishes, cremation will take place, and no local services are scheduled at this time.
