With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of GONZALO "CHALO" FLORES, of Las Cruces, NM on June 5, 2024, at the age of 88 years.

He will be lovingly remembered by his children: Yolanda Munoz (Joe), Gonzalo Jr., (Vivian), Terri Bullard, Benny (Martha), Olga Phillips, Tina Lara (Rob), 16 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren with one on the way, and one great-great-grandchild; sisters Maria Inez and Carmen Erlinda; as well as numerous relatives and friends.  Gonzalo was predeceased by his loving wife of 66 years, Celina; son, Rene; daughter-in-law, Rosemary; brothers Antonio (Tony), Jesus, Enrique, Fidel, and Victor; sisters Eulalia (Lala), Lorenza (Christina), and Rosa and his parents Fidel and Carmen.

Gonzalo was born in San Elizario, Texas, his journey began humbly as a shoe shiner along the bustling streets of Anthony, NM, where he also assisted his father with tractor maintenance. His strong work ethic led him to later work at the local service station.

Gonzalo's true passion lay in carpentry, where his talent flourished as a master carpenter. As a proud member of the Carpenter's Local Union for many years, he contributed his skills to notable projects, including the early construction phases of Mesilla Valley Mall and Inn of the Mountain Gods. His craftmanship left an indelible mark on the community he cherished.

A pillar of faith, Gonzalo was a founding member of Santa Rosa de Lima Church, where he served on the building committee and dedicated his time to various church activities. His commitment to service extended beyond the church walls, as he volunteered to distribute commodities at the local community center, embodying the spirit of compassion and generosity.

On December 9, 1957, Gonzalo married the love of his life, Celina Apodaca, with whom he shared a bond of unwavering love and devotion. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories. In addition to his passion for carpentry, Gonzalo was an avid reader, particularly drawn to the works of Rodolfo Anaya and literature rooted in the rich tapestry of New Mexico. Gonzalo will be remembered for his kindness, dedication, and the lasting impact he made on all who had the privilege of knowing him. He leaves behind a legacy of love and service that will continue to inspire generations to come.

Prayer Vigil followed by Funeral Mass will be held at 10 AM, Thursday, June 20, 2024, at Santa Rosa de Lima Church, 5035 Holman Road, L.C., NM 88011. Burial will follow at San Albino Cemetery, 3120 Calle de Guadalupe.

Serving as casket bearers will be grandsons, Marco Munoz, Gilbert Munoz, Christopher Lara, Ivan Flores, Julian Phillips, Alexander Bullard, and great grandsons Phillip and Fabien Bailon.
