Elvira M. Madrid, a devoted mother, grandmother, and pillar of quiet strength, passed away at home peacefully on January 9, 2026. She was born on May 20, 1933, in Tortugas, New Mexico, to Guadalupe M. and Thomas Montoya from Tortugas.
Elvira's life was defined by compassion, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to her family. Despite having only a third grade education, she raised her children with profound wisdom, patience, and unconditional love. She opened her home and her heart to many as a foster parent, offering safety, warmth, and guidance to those who needed it most. Her kindness was boundless, she never hesitated to help others, often going out of her way to support anyone in need.
She is survived by her son, Johnny M. Montoya and wife Martha Montoya of California and her daughters: Ramona Lucero of Texas, Genevieve Flores, Mary Helen Marquez, Rosemary Perez all of Arizona and Grace Madrid and of Las Cruces. Her legacy also lives on through six generations of grandchildren.
Elvira was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Ramon B. Madrid of Las Cruces, second husband Robert E. Madrid of Dona Ana and her children Nora Howard, Ramon Madrid Jr., and Gloria Madrid.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 30, 2026, at Baca's Funeral Chapel, 300 E. Boutz Road, where family and friends will gather to honor a life lived with extraordinary heart. A private inurnment will be held at a later date.
Elvira will be remembered for her kindness, her strength, and the love she poured into everyone around her. Her presence will be deeply missed, and her memory cherished always.
