Benita J. Meraz, 90, passed away peacefully on May 1, 2026, at La Posada Mesilla Valley Hospice, surrounded by her loving family. She was a longtime resident of Las Cruces, New Mexico, and was born in Veinte Amigos, Durango, Mexico, to Juan Jaquez and Elena Rivas.
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, family member, and friend, Benita Meraz.
Benita was a loving and devoted mother whose life centered on her family. Her children were her greatest joy, and she dedicated herself to caring for and supporting them with unwavering love and strength. A hardworking woman, she led by example and instilled the values of kindness, culture, perseverance, faith, and family.
Known for her warm heart and generous spirit, Benita welcomed everyone into her home as family. She found great joy in bringing loved ones together and was especially known for her delicious tamales, chiles, and traditional Mexican dishes. Her cooking created lasting memories and brought comfort and joy to all who gathered around her table.
A faithful devotee of the Virgin of Guadalupe, Benita carried her faith throughout her life and found strength, guidance, and peace in her devotion. Her compassion, humility, and generosity reflected that faith each day.
Benita also had a special love for animals and cared for them deeply throughout her life. Her gentle and compassionate nature extended to all living things, reflecting the immense kindness in her heart.
She leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and devotion that will live on through her children, grandchildren, family members, and the many friends whose lives she touched. Though she will be deeply missed, her memory will remain forever in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
Benita is survived by her children, Maria De Los Angeles (Jorge), Mary Tabizon, Samuel Meraz (Mariluz), Hector Meraz (Stella), Robert "Bobby" Meraz and Nancy Meraz, as well as her grandchildren, extended family, and dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her children, Blanca Estella Meraz and Martha Meraz, and her husband, Erasmo Meraz.
May Our Lord and the Blessed Virgin Mary welcome her into eternal rest and grant comfort to all who mourn her passing.
