Obituary

It is with heavy hearts to announce the passing of Antonio (Tony) Arrellin Angel Jr at the age of 71.

Tony was born to Antonio Rivera Angel and Jesusita Arrellin Angel on August 20, 1953, in Las Cruces. Tony was raised in the Hatch Valley. He graduated from Hatch High School in 1972 and went on to proudly serve in the United States Army in 1973. After years of dedicated service, he went on to marry Antonia Mata de Angel in 1977.

Tony worked for the New Mexico State Highway Department for 20 years. After retiring, Tony loved to spend time with his wife of 48 years, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, abundant garden, and numerous animals.

Tony was a dedicated, proud, and loving father to three children Raymon Angel (deceased), Jesus (Lisa) Angel, and Juanita Angel. He was also a cherished stepfather to Victor (Anna) Mata, Mona (Lupe) Espinoza, Lorenzo (Erica) Mata, and Jaime Mata.

Tony is preceded in death by both parents, infant brother Antonio, son Raymon Angel, and nephew Raymundo Venegas. He is survived by his wife, two children, 4 stepchildren, 2 sisters Patsy Angel and Lucy Venegas, 14 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, 11 chickens, a rooster, 2 bunnies, a dog, and various parakeets, as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Tony was beloved by so many friends and family around New Mexico. His passing is deeply felt throughout the Hatch community. Tony will be remembered for his beautiful smile, contagious laughter, unwavering faith in the Lord, and his grace. His memory will be carried on by all those who were blessed to know Tony the Tiger.

The pallbearers will be sons Jesus (Chuy) Angel, Stephen Medina, stepson Jaime Mata, grandsons Jesus Angel Jr, Jesse Angel, Chris Medina, Issac Angel, nephew Johnny Angel, and honorary pallbearer great-grandson Antonio (Tigger) Angel Chavez.

A visitation will be held at 5pm on Tuesday July 8, 2025, at Baca's Funeral Home, 300 East Boutz Road. A prayer vigil will follow at 6pm.  The funeral mass will be held at 10am on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, at Our Lord of Mercy Catholic Church in Hatch, NM. Tony will be laid to rest at Garden of Memories in Hatch, NM.

The Angel family would also like to send a huge thank you to Davita Renal Center in Las Cruces for their dedicated and unwavering commitment to Tony's renal health these last few years.
