MR. ALFONSO MONTEZ, age 89, lifelong resident of Lordsburg, NM., passed away Sunday, October 20, 2024, in Las Cruces. He was born December 26, 1934, to Bertha Tarazon and Vicente Montez. Alfonso served his country honorably in the United States Marine Crop and was the proud recipient of the Purple Heart. After the Military, Alfonso was employed with the United States Postal Service as a mail clerk and carrier until his retirement.
Those left to mourn his passing include a son, Alfonso Montez (Yolanda) of Las Cruces; 2 daughters, Michelle Montez of Albuquerque, and Belinda Crotts of Duncan, AZ., a sister, Frances Brennan (Theodore) of Las Cruces; and daughter-in-law, Anna Sanchez Montez of Lordsburg. Other survivors include 8 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Maria Dolores Serna Montez; son, Stephen Antonio Montez; 2 sisters, Mary Young, and Valentina Montez; and a brother, Vicente T. Montez.
Visitation for Mr. Montez will begin at 6 PM Thursday, November 7, 2024, at Baca's Funeral Chapel, 300 E. Boutz Road, Las Cruces with the Prayer Vigil at 7 PM. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 AM Friday, November 8, 2024, at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 1327 N. Miranda Street. The Rite of Committal and Interment will follow at 2 PM at the Shakespeare Cemetery, 25 Banner Mine Road, Lordsburg, NM. Military Honors will be accorded by the United States Marine Corp and the Marine Corps League of Silver City.
Serving as casket bearers will be Xander and Marcus Castillo, Larry Wayne Crotts, Levi, Antiono, and Alfonso, III Montez. Honorary bearers are Miguel, Frank Jr., Ramon, John and Bernabe Acosta, Paul Bravo and David Montoya.
