ALFONSO APODACA HOLGUIN, 83, a lifelong resident of Las Cruces, entered eternal life on Sunday, July 5, 2026, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. Alfonso was born September 20, 1942, to Simona Apodaca and Locadio Holguin.

After graduating from high school, Alfonso proudly joined the United States Army, where he served his country with honor until his discharge in 1965. Two years later, in 1967, he began a long and dedicated career with the Las Cruces Fire Department. His commitment, courage, and leadership were evident throughout his service, and in 1977 he was promoted to Lieutenant. Alfonso continued to serve his community faithfully until his retirement in 1992.

A devout member of the Catholic Church, Alfonso lived his faith with humility and gratitude. He cherished time with his family and carried a quiet strength that guided those he loved.

He is survived by three loving sons: Alfonso R. Holguin (Sharon), Ricardo Holguin, and Matthew J. Holguin; a brother, Leo Holguin; and three sisters, Lupita Espinoza, Gloria Galaz, and Yolanda Medina. Alfonso also leaves behind six grandchildren, three great‑grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews who will remember him with affection and pride. Alfonso was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Barbara Holguin, who passed away in 2017; a brother, Arturo Holguin; and his sister, Genevieve Barela.

Alfonso's legacy is one of service, devotion, and deep family love. His presence will be profoundly missed, yet his memory will continue to bless all who knew him.

At his request cremation has taken place and a Celebration of life will begin with the Holy Rosary at 10 AM, Thursday, July 23, 2026, at Baca's Funeral Chapel, 300 E. Boutz Road. The Liturgy of the Word will follow. Inurnment of cremains will be held at a later date.

Military Honors will be accorded by the United States Army National Guard Honor Guard and the Marines Corps League El Perro Diablo Detachment.

The Last Bell Ceremony will be held by the Las Cruces Fire Department.
