ALEXANDER MACIAS MERCADO, 86 of Las Cruces entered eternal rest on Wednesday, November 1, 2023, at Memorial Medical Center surrounded by his loved ones. He was born April 7, 1937, in Doña Ana to Quirina Macias and Felix Mercado. In February of 1966, "Alex" as he was fondly known to family and friends was honorably Discharged from the United States Army Reserve. He retired from the United States Post Service after 30 years of service, as a mail carrier and was a member of the Roman Catholic Church.
Alex was a hard-working man who put his families need first. He loved his "Oldies but Goodies" and doing word puzzles. Alex was always doing something to stay active, but a rare disease made the last five years very difficult to accomplish what he wanted. He battled through, but the illness was finally too much. Alex will be forever missed and daily loved.
Survivors include his loving wife of 56 years, Guadalupe "Lupe" Armendariz Mercado; son, Mark Mercado; 2 daughters, Diane Venegas (Tony) and Cynthia Mercado-McKamy (George); 2 sisters, Maria M. Mercado, and Helen Wesley all of Las Cruces. Other survivors include 6 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Alex was preceded in death by his parents; 2 brothers, Fermin & Felix Mercado; 2 sisters, Sofia Mercado, and Tomasa Enriquez.
Visitation for Mr. Mercado will begin at 1:30 PM Wednesday, November 15, 2023, at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, 1240 S. Espina Street where the Prayer Vigil is scheduled for 2 PM. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated immediately thereafter. The Rite of Committal and Interment will follow at Masonic Cemetery, 760 S. Compress Road, where he will be laid to rest in the family plot.
Serving as casket bearers will be Tony Venegas, George and Hunter McKamy, Mark, and Javier Mercado and Gorni Flores.
